Pure Water Monterey is an advanced water recycling project, jointly developed by two public agencies – Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (MPWMD) and the Monterey One Water (M1W). Pure Water Monterey is a multi-benefit, integrated, regional solution that will provide a water recycling model for other regions in California.
Using proven, advanced, multi-stage treatment to provide a safe, reliable and sustainable drinking water supply that complys with or exceeds strict state and federal drinking water standards, the project reduces water taken from the Carmel River and the Seaside Basin. In doing so, it helps meet regulatory orders and enhance water supply reliability by diversifying local water sources.
The purified water complys with or exceeds strict state and federal drinking water standards. The purification process includes membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, oxidation with hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet light followed by natural percolation into the groundwater basin. This technology has been proven safe and reliable throughout the United States and the world.
Regional Collaboration
The Pure Water Monterey project is based on a regionally based collaborative approach to providing a safe, pure and locally owned water source for the Monterey Peninsula and beyond. Multiple public agencies form the foundation for a truly innovative potable water project. Those agencies include:
